Church Overview
Nagaura Church began on December 24, 1949, with its first six baptized members. It started as the only Catholic church on the Chita Peninsula, with Fr. Wiezen, who was an English lecturer at Nanzan University at the time, serving as its first parish priest. Since then, the number of parishioners gradually grew, reaching around 240 people at one point.
Back then, Nagaura was close to the sea and was one of Nagoya’s leading tourist spots as a seaside villa area. However, as time passed, the sea was reclaimed and tourists declined, resulting in fewer visitors to Nagaura. Because the journey to Nagaura Church was long for parishioners coming from Handa and Tokai, churches were eventually dedicated in those locations, which led to a decrease in the number of parishioners belonging to Nagaura Church.
Today, it is a church with a warm, family-like atmosphere. Some who have moved away fondly return to visit. Everyone loves this welcoming community. Nagaura Church stands atop a small hill, surrounded by woods and cherry trees. The setting is lovely with a wonderful view, and in the summer, you can hear the cheerful chirping of cicadas.
A defining feature of Nagaura Church is everyone’s willingness to work together. When the parish priest calls for assistance, several people come to help even on weekdays. On Sundays as well, parishioners gladly lend a hand with the upkeep of the church grounds, creating a wonderful parish community. It is a warm sight to see parishioners chatting with the priest over a cup of coffee after Mass, both on Sundays and weekdays.
Located at the back of the church grounds is Nagaura Seibo Kindergarten, which has walked hand in hand with the church over the years. Every day, the lively sight of many children playing and parents visiting creates a vibrant environment. Even for non-believers, it serves as a wonderful place to listen to stories about God, sing hymns, and pray, nurturing a heart of gratitude toward God.
Won’t you come and visit this sacred place that nurtures the hearts of so many young ones? We look forward to welcoming you.
